Over the past few weeks we’ve had the pleasure of working with a local early learning center called Imagination Station. Their company has two locations based in Snoqualmie and North Bend, WA. They first approached us for help with designing a new modern website to represent their company and brand.

As we always do when starting a new website design project, we asked if they already had a logo design for the company. It’s very common for our clients to need a new logo design to complement their new website. But in this case we were pleasantly surprised to find they already had a great logo design in hand. There was just one small problem… the logo was completely monochromatic (one color) and using a color that was out of gamut (not a proper CMYK color).

Despite their logo having a great design, it lacked a color design; and color is one of the most important ingredients in any successful logo. We knew that in order to design their website that their logo would have to have an attractive color palette. In fact, the company logo is almost always the single source of color inspiration when we’re designing a website. With this in mind we recommended a Logo Color Design project so that we could improve this otherwise fantastic logo.

Here is what their logo looked like before we started…

Logo Color Design - Before & After - Before the Project

We were really facing two challenges to improve this design… the first was to improve the kerning (the spacing between the letters), and the second was to create a new color design. We noticed right away that the kerning was a little too tight, which resulted in a crowded look and feel. When kerning is set too small, this can also cause problems when the logo is presented at smaller sizes (such as on a website). Our first step was therefore to carefully set the kerning and allow for a little more breathing room.

When designing the new colors we had several goals in mind…

  1. We needed industry appropriate colors that were both fun and playful.
  2. We needed colors that weren’t overly bright or that over-powered the design.
  3. We needed at least one neutral color to balance the more fun colors.
  4. We needed to ensure the logo projected an overall professional look and feel.
  5. We needed to ensure the colors were in CMYK gamut for printing purposes.

After several tries we created a total of five unique fun colors and one neutral color, a charcoal (80% gray). We found that in this particular design the fun colors looked best if they were completely surrounded by the neutral color. The helped to keep the fun colors under control, and maintained a professional look and feel.

While we liked all five of the original fun colors, we found that it was a little too much when presented in the single word, “Station.” The decision was made to only use three fun colors and then repeat the order of those colors in each letter. This allowed us to start and end the word “Station” with the same color, helping to enclose the design even more.

Ultimately we achieved this bold new color design…

Portfolio - 2015 - Imagination Station - Logo 01 - Color Design 01

This new color design really embodied the perfect balance between fun and professional, and we were all extremely pleased with the results! We now have a logo with an inspirational color design to help shape the website, and more importantly to project the culture and personality of this imaginative company.

As I said earlier, color is one of the most important aspects to a successful logo, and it is far too often overlooked even in some of the finest designs. Whenever we’re designing an original logo we devote an entire stage of the design process exclusively to determining the colors, which we call a “color study.” By taking the time to carefully select the colors, we achieve a far superior result.

Ultimately a logo’s colors are the company’s colors, and no logo is complete without making sure they properly represent that company. In the case of Imagination Station, we now have colors that will inspire the imagination of everyone who sees them!

This week we welcomed onboard a new client, Evergreen Yachts, located here in our very own home-town of North Bend, WA. We’re incredibly excited to be working with this innovative company and helping them to establish their new brand and web presence.

Evergreen Yachts specializes in supplying maintenance equipment, parts and supplies specifically for “mega yacht” owners around the world. In a niche market infamous for inflated prices and poor service, Evergreen Yachts is aiming to be different then the competition. Their focus is on providing quality service at reasonable prices. Additionally, they are looking to expand into staffing and management services as well.

We’re working closely with Evergreen Yachts to establish a global brand synonymous with quality and service. To that end our first projects together are a new corporate logo and website, which will be tightly intertwined to project their new brand. Following this we hope to help market this company and guide them on their path to success.

Stay tuned on this project, because we’re going to have some amazing work to show!

This is our latest logo design created for Cedar River Construction of Maple Valley, WA. We’ve been working closely with them over the past few weeks to refine this concept. This was a rather challenging design in many respects, and it really pushed us to think creatively.

Cedar River Construction specializes in fences, decks and other outdoor structures. We knew from the start that transforming something as ordinary as a fence into a creative design would be difficult at best. We spoke with our client to determine how to best represent them visually, and one statement they made really stuck out, that was “quality craftsmanship.” So we wanted to really get that idea across, but also to brand this in a way that said what they do and where they’re from.

After flushing out many early ideas, we focused on the basic concepts of the tree (to represent the Pacific Northwest), the fence (to show what they do and represent craftsmanship), and the river (to tie everything together with their name). You can see in the design drawings how we chose this basic concept and then expanded on it with several layout variations.

Our client really loved the idea of having their name appear as if it were “cut out” of the fence. So we proceeded forward with that variation and worked hard to make the typography legible. There are many great design features in this logo, but by far my personal favorite is the river. We placed the river at the bottom of the design which really sets this apart from other logos we’ve seen. We allowed the river to appear is if it were flowing beyond the logo, which created a dynamic effect.

The tree is naturally a Pacific Northwest species and has some great details in the line art (vector artwork). We were able to make it appear as if the branches of the tree were a continuation of the arches in the fence. This helped the connection between the fence and the tree to look fluid. And of course there is the fence itself, which we chose this arched style to demonstrate the idea of craftsmanship, even including little end caps on each fence post.

Setting the color in this design was equally challenging! We worked hard and completed a full color study before arriving at the colors you see here. Part of the color challenge was to choose tones that appeared natural but also would stand out on both a white and black background. Perhaps the toughest color to get right was the wood tone of the fence. We wanted it to look like a red cedar. It took a lot of trial and error to get that color to look just right.

The end result of this project is a very creative and unique logo that will represent Cedar River Construction well as they move forward. This project is also part of a rebranding we’re performing for them, and this design will therefore influence many other things such as their new website which we’re building and their future marketing.

Our logo designs are always created with the bigger picture in mind, and we think this logo sets the tone just right for Cedar River Construction!

Over the past few weeks we’ve been working with a locally owned property management company to help craft their new brand and web presence. That company is Seattle’s Property Management, a subset of The Bronson Group. Their focus is on residential rental homes and small multiplexes, and working one-on-one with owners to maximize their investments.

Our challenge on this project was to create an entirely new brand and corporate identity for the client that would replace their original brand, and that could later be marketed on the internet to their target audience. We created for them a new CMS based website with an All-Seattle color theme and an overall inviting aesthetic. The website’s home page was tailored as a highly focused landing page, with clear messages, interactive features and a contact short-form integrated directly into the header.

One of the unique requirements of this project was a fully integrated appointment scheduling system, that would enable the client to set their own appointment times and allow visitors to choose time-slots from that selection. We were able to create this unique feature by leveraging the services of TimeTrade (TimeTrade.com) and integrating it directly into the website’s user interface. Other key features of the website include a light-box photo gallery, testimonials slider, and a rather sophisticated Google Maps integration on the contact page. Seattle’s Property Management was thrilled with the results and our usual fast turnaround time. They are now planning to grow the site further and launch a new internet marketing campaign with us.

This has been a great project, and we welcome you all to visit their new website at SeattlesPropertyManagement.com.
